A black and white photograph taken by fine artist Cody Schultz while on family vacation out to Wyoming. This photograph features a chapel/church in front of the Grand Teton mountain range near Jackson, Wyoming. A fence made of long, thin logs sits in the foreground, pointing up towards the church, which points up to the mountains, and the blank, gray sky.

Chapel of Transfiguration

Hidden deep within the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, the "Chapel of Transfiguration" sits, waiting patiently for someone to come along. When first told of this chapel, I immediately began to previsualize the scene, knowing right away what I wanted to create. Whether it was luck, patience, or a combination of both, the image was created almost precisely as it had been seen in my mind.

A black and white photograph by fine artist Cody Schultz, this photo is of a serene moment on a beach in New Jersey. The photograph is of a grouping of highly detailed rocks surrounding a small, barren bush. The entire scene is rather calming, without being too much drama or too deep of blacks.

The Beach

One of the first times I had gone down to the beach with photography in mind was back in February of 2017. I had a goal of photographing the waves, creating beautiful works of abstract art. However, the most breathtaking work created on that particular trip would have to be this image, entitled rather simply as "The Beach." The simplicity of the scene at first glance, paired with the light monochrome conversion, pleases the eye and brings a calm feeling to the room when framed and hung on the wall.

A black and white photograph by fine artist Cody Schultz, this high-contrast scene depict a lone tree growing within a boulder field in eastern Pennsylvania. In the background, almost-black pine trees grow tall, touching a stormy, dramatic sky. The light from behind the camera grazes the lone tree, highlighting it from the rest of the scene.

Find A Way

Lone trees have always fascinated me. The pure idea of standing so tall, so strong, independent of anything else around them. It inspires me in my own life, that one can survive - no, thrive - even if it feels as though they have not a single person to count on. When I found this tree in the middle of a boulder field, it inspired me moreso than any other I had found so far. The image previsualized, I only had to wait for the right light before crafting this image...

A black and white photograph by fine artist Cody Schultz, this high-contrast photograph of the Grand Teton mountain range is one of few vertical images made by the artist. The glaciers on the mountaintops glisten a pure white, contrasted by the black and deep grays of the rest of the mountain. The sky, full of clouds, helps to create drama within the scene.

The Grand Tetons

Originally this image was a horizontal composition, taken while on a moving bus on a family trip out west. Yet when I had pulled the photograph up in the editing suite, I decided to try something different with it, cropping into the horizontal frame, creating a brand new image, all its own. This one - while much darker and moodier - holds a particular place in my heart, giving off a different sort of calm.

A black and white photograph by fine artist Cody Schultz, Fresh Rain shows a simplistic scene, featuring a plant coated in fresh dew from a rain earlier that morning. The drops of rain on the plant glisten in the light, perfectly complimenting the glossy, silver sheen of the rest of the plant, which is further complimented by the black shadows and the out of focus background.

Fresh Rain

Hickory Run State Park is one of my all-time favorite photography destinations. Every time I visit, I seem to find new subjects, along with new composiions of old photographs. While I have yet to capture the waterfall of the area in a way I am proud of, I find intimate scenes like this all of the time.

It was while visiting the park for a third time - this time in the spring rather than fall/winter - I had noticed this beautiful plant, freshly licked by fallen rain. Although I originally came to the particular location to re-photograph an old image, this stood out to me much more and became the "image-of-the-day" in a sense.

A black and white photograph by fine artist Cody Schultz, this scene shows two individuals walking along a dirt pathway that looks silver from the light. The rest of the scene - a mixture of different trees as seen from above - is high-contrast, with leaves and trees standing out from each other simply due to the toning.

Overlook

In 2017, my girlfriend and I went on our first solo camping trip to Western Pennsylvania. Our first destination before heading to Allegheny National Forest was Kinzua Bridge State Park. This broken-down bridge, high up in the sky, was both beautiful and nerve-wracking to walk upon. When we got to the end of the bridge, I happened to look down upon two people walking along the trail below us. Thus, this image was born.

A black and white photograph by fine artist Cody Schultz, this abstract scene depicts a cluster of barren tree branches reaching out to the viewer, highlighted with bright white snow. This snowy, abstract scene is very minimalistic and further amplified by the simple, square crop.

Resilience

Trees have always stood out to me in a way nothing else every will. The way they can grow tall and strong amongst boulders ("Find A Way") or seem so separated from the rest of the world ("In The Farmer's Field") - it all amazes me. So when I saw the way this particular tree stood out from the rest, seemingly fighting against the harsh blizzard, I had to create something from the scene.

A black and white photograph by fine artist Cody Schultz, In The Farmer’s Field is a miminalistic square piece of a lone tree withstanding a snow-storm, standing without company in the field of a local farmer. In the background, almost entirely hidden by the snow, are some of the buildings owned by the farmer, including his barn and home.

In The Farmer's Field

During one of the first blizzards of 2017, my girlfriend and I chose to go on a photo-centered walk along the back-roads by my house. Although this tree had not stood out to me earlier - most likely due to the lack of separation from the surrounding environment - it certainly did that day. I could not resist creating an image from the scene. This one in particular was what helped solidify my wanting to create calming photographs to print large and hang on the wall.

Everything in this photograph - especially when printed - shimmers; from the highlights in the water to the bright white glaciers on the mountaintops, every inch of this photograph shines like no other.

Standing Tall

Had it not been for my grandmother pointing this scene out to me while on our family trip out west, this image would have never been created. Unsure of how I wanted to capture this, I chose to do a simple 4x5 image along with this panorama. While I love both of them, I feel as though this one in particular has many more redeeming qualities, especially once printed.

A black and white photograph by fine artist Cody Schultz, Yellowstone Falls pictures the most popular waterfall in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. This panoramic piece is highly detailed, with the almost-white river leading up to the powerful waterfall, the strong amounts of mist crashing up, reaching to be almost half as tall as the fall itself.

Yellowstone Falls

An iconic waterfall within Yellowstone National Park, I could not help but take a shot at photographing it in what I hoped would be a semi-unique way. While I am unsure of whether that was accomplished, I decided crafting a panorama would be my best bet. The amount of detail hidden within the scene truly astonishes me and is only further revealed when printed.

A black and white photograph by fine artist Cody Schultz, In Bloom shows a simple panoramic scene of a single cluster of flowers growing upon a branch, not far from a rushing waterfall. The leaves shine a beautiful metallic gray, complimenting the bright white of the flower, while the background is almost entirely out of focus.

In Bloom

It was while watching a fellow photographer's vlog that I was introduced to the art of capturing intimate moments. Far too often, we get caught-up in the grand scheme of things, focusing on the larger projects, the end-goal of one's life. We overlook these small moments; the way the pebbles on the ground look like the milky way; the way the white flowers, just beginning to bloom, stand out from the rest of the leaves on the branch.

Slow down; look around. You will be amazed at what you see.

A black and white photograph by fine artist Cody Schultz, this piece was created while exploring a handful of waterfalls in New York state during a camping trip. Another panoramic piece, this photograph shows Lucifer Falls as it rushes from corner to corner of the frame, standing out just enough from the rest of the scene which ranges in from a plain gray to a deep black tone.

Lucifer Falls

With a name like Lucifer Falls, one must visit, even if it may not seem all that worth it at first. My knee was still injured from visiting 'Adams Falls' so traversing these trails - despite again being simple rock paths - was not the easiest. There was a viewpoint of this waterfall that I could have gone to that would have allowed me a higher vantage point and a totally different composition. Yet with my knee as bad as it was, I decided against it and settled for this photograph. Soon enough, I will go back and we shall see what happens then.

A black and white photograph by fine artist Cody Schultz, this panoramic image shows what is said to be the most beautiful/popular waterfall in Ricketts Glen, Pennsylvania. In the foreground stands a plant, just barely recognizable due to being blurred by the wind. Behind it is the waterfall, framed by the rock walls to either side. The entire image has an almost metallic shine to it.

Adam's Falls

Despite having gone to Ricketts Glen a total of three times in 2017 and 2018, Adams Falls was one of the only waterfalls I had not gotten to witness. Yet when we had come across it, it was love at first sight. Everything about the waterfall seemed to call to me in a way very few others had. Within Pennsylvania, it has grown to be one of my favorite waterfalls. Give me a few months, however, and I will find a new favorite. I love nature.

A black and white photograph by fine artist Cody Schultz, Watkins Glen is a vertical panorama, one of the first by the artist. The scene shows a grouping of waterfalls, hidden by the rock walls that frame it on either side. Near the top of the frame stands a bridge that connects either side of the walls; toward the left of the frame is a rock staircase with no sign of people, a rare sight for such a popular destination.

Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen was an interesting case, unlike most of the areas I had photographed while on my yearly camping trip. It challenged me as I could not get close to the waterfall, get into the river, feel nature around me. Instead, I felt people's heat radiating from their bodies; I struggled to capture an image without humans in it; I had to carefully guard my camera so nobody would accidentally bump into it, rendering the exposure useless.

It is a place that is enjoyable to visit but a true challenge to photograph well.

A black and white photograph by fine artist Cody Schultz, Cascade depicts a single, small waterfall as it streams down a slight hill aside a popular trail in Ricketts Glen, Pennsylvania. This scene is rather unique, given that it is not an official waterfall of the park and therefore does not occur except for after heavy rainfall. The bright white waterfall stands out from the rest of the dark scene and is started at the top of the vertical panorama with a large cluster of bright leaves in the upper left corner.

Cascade

Ricketts Glen is known for having a day's worth of photographic waterfalls; one can spend hours simply taking in the beauty of a single fall. Being able to truly enjoy all of them in a day is impossible, regardless of what others will tell. And it seems every time I have gone to this area, I have found new hidden treasures.

This cascade had never before caught my eye - I am unsure of whether it had even existed prior. The light seemed to catch just right as I leveled my tripod, prepared my camera, and began taking the shots needed to make this vertical panorama.

A black and white photograph by fine artist Cody Schultz. Forest Views is a panoramic image capturing Kaaterskill Falls in New York - near the Catskill Mountains - as dark storm clouds roll over the scene, threatening rain. The waterfall itself sits in the lower-middle of the frame with bright, lively trees on either side, helping to frame the scene. This highly detailed scene is made up of a number of individual photographs, making for a very large file and a beautiful print.

Forest Views

As we sat eating our lunch, we watched as the storm rolled in over the waterfall. A man in a bright flourescent jacket could be seen standing out from everything else as he explored the waterfall. Melanie and I couldn't help but laugh about the oddness of it all. This scene encapsulated me, the dark storm clouds rolling in overhead, threatening our beautiful day spent outside. Rather than ruin the day, however, I feel they enhanced it, making it so much more interesting.

In the background is Kaaterskill Falls, a popular waterfall in the Catskill Mountain area of New York State. Although the plant is somewhat blurred, it adds to the moody nature of the scene, showing the power behind the waterfall as it splashes mist and wind upon everything around it.

Withstanding

As we headed down to get closer to the waterfall, I remember seeing a sign with a painting of the waterfall on it. The scene was beautifully composed and heavily inspired me with this photograph that I later made. What amazed me the most, however, was that this plant has been withstanding the power of the mist and winds caused by the waterfall for decades, included in the painting and the millions of other photographs since then. I can only imagine how long it has sat here, enjoying the views.
